Over the last couple of weeks, staff and administration have noticed an increase in the use of hate speech by students at the high school. Hate speech includes, but is not limited to, any derogatory remarks based on a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, sexual preference, etc. Administration met with students yesterday, January 31st to inform students that from this point on there will be zero tolerance for hate speech or gestures by students. Students who are heard saying derogatory remarks or seen making derogatory gestures will immediately receive a suspension.
Our goal is to ensure that students understand that using that kind of speech is inappropriate in a school setting and in society. We would like to ask for your help in reiterating to your student(s) the inappropriate nature of hate speech.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Montoya.
